Labrador North Chamber of Commerce (LNCC) and The Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce (BRCC) are jointly producing a high profile event – the Northern Lights 2008 Trade Show and Conference.  This ground breaking, business and cultural showcase of Labrador, Nunavut and Nunavik will be held at the Ottawa Congress Centre from January 30 - February 2, 2008.

The show will serve many purposes including:

  • Help to create stronger relationships between northern regions;
  • General promotion of our regions to the southern markets;
  • Promotion of economic development opportunities available in the eastern Arctic and North;
  • Promote joint ventures and the exchange of information between the northern regions and others;
  • Allow northern organizations the opportunity to establish new relationships with southern businesses;
  • Promote Expo Labrador, the Nunavut Trade Show and Conference and other regional trade shows and conferences to the south and to the other northern regions;
  • Promote eastern Arctic and North tourism, culture and the arts to both the South and other northern regions.

The four day event is expected to attract over 100 exhibitors and more than 400 delegates.  The opening of the event will occur on Wednesday, January 30th and will include a welcome from the chairs and presentations from high profile speakers as well as a great show from “Insolita”, a spin-off from Cirque du Soleil. The displays on the trade show floor will include private business and all three levels of government from the participating regions and southern interests as well as two special areas; a stage for cultural presentations and an area to demonstrate and display regional art and artists.

The conferences sessions will focus on economic development opportunities in each of the regions. There will be speakers from each of the participating regions throughout the conferences which may also include workshops and other events that would be a benefit to all those attending the show, both southern and northern. The conferences will be followed by sponsored lunches and include keynote speeches from the regional Premiers (to be confirmed) and other high profile speakers.

A black tie gala is planned for the final evening of the event.  This gala will occur in the Grand Hall in the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec.  This event will include several very high profile speakers, performers from across the eastern arctic and may include a charity auction or other fundraising opportunities for charities in the regions that participate in the Northern Lights Trade Show and Conference.

Northern Lights 2008 is also scheduled to be the official opening for Winterlude, Ottawa’s annual winter carnival which draws hundreds of thousands of people from across the country and around the world.  The first weekend of Winterlude will coincide with the trade show’s public day, being held on Saturday, February 2.

The publicity that can be derived from such a big first time event in Ottawa will go a long way to promoting the culture, the people and the economic development opportunities in the Eastern Arctic and North to the south and offer a tremendous opportunity to organizations, both northern and southern, to market themselves and continue strengthen their business relationships.
