PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS
Sterling Peyton
President

Welcome to the
Labrador North
Chamber of Commerce

Known as ‘The Big Land,’ Labrador is also known as the Land of Big Opportunities.  This vast region located on the north east coast of North America, is rich in resources and wide open spaces.  Formerly overlooked as development raced towards the Arctic, Labrador’s resources are for the most part unexplored or only recently under development.  Key examples include the nickel and other metals mine/mill at Voisey’s Bay to the north, and the massive Upper Churchill hydroelectric development to the west.  Untapped natural gas reserves along the Labrador Coast, uranium deposits, the potential of the lower Churchill River, and many other projects promise an exciting future for this region.

At the heart of this land of opportunity is Lake Melville and the economy of the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce.  This energetic and creative group of entrepreneurs, including an expanding number of aboriginal controlled firms, is involved in several sectors including transportation, mining, tourism, fishery, and services.  Many support the infrastructure and international training arena offered at 5 Wing Goose Bay. Recent announcements by the Federal Government point to an ongoing strategic role in terms of continental defence and northern sovereignty.

As a Chamber, the over 130 members of the LNCC have assumed a regional leadership role in developing circumpolar partnerships in Canada and internationally.  While building a solid reputation and experience in Russia, Labrador has also been working closely with Nunavut and the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce for several years.  These two Chambers again spearheaded ‘Northern Lights,’ a large conference and trade show that took place in Montreal, Quebec, in January 2010.  Labrador, Nunatsiavut, Nunavut, Nunavik and other northern regions / countries are set to join this exciting initiative.

As in any organization, success comes from the people involved.  Our professional and experienced staff works closely with our members and visitors.  Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require further information.  You may wish to experience this all first-hand and participate in our annual Trade Show and Conference known as ‘Expo Labrador’ each June.

Best wishes,

Sterling Peyton
